As teachers, we continually exhibit the desire to improve our self-directed learning strategies that lead to quality teaching moments. I envision completion of Leading Edge Certification training as a method of understanding the process of blending, and promoting self-directed learning with technology. The highest priority learning goal I discovered as a result of online learning assessment this past week is two-fold. First, I need to acquire the self-direction necessary to improve my time-management skills and study habits. Second, I have to take a proactive role in developing communication skills vital to online collaboration.
In our introductory resources this week, the authors focused on the online students’ understanding the importance of self-directed learning through technology integration to complete the requirements for Leading Edge Certification (Powell, A., Hiles, B., & Bell, C., 2014, January 9). Additionally, creative thinking coupled with our ability to understand online content and contextual concepts will help all of us in this course implement technology enabling critical thinking, create disciplined inquiry, and find value beyond the classroom (Cennamo, K., Ross, J. & Ertmer, P., 2009, p. 36).
A question I take forward this week is determining what specific skills, strategies, and tools I would like to learn about. I want to focus on time management skills to complete this course and participate in district adoption of portable devices (Chromebook's and iPad’s) and crossover technology skills necessary to transform current content standard grade-level expectations into common core learning requirements. As an English teacher, understanding how this educational technology works will take a leading role in demonstrating the transfer of Common Core State Standards [CCSS] as our students participate in the writing, delivery, and distribution of content to their intended audience.
Additionally, it would be nice to gain a better foothold in video production and actually completing some projects will give me the confidence to teach these skills to my students. Even with all the training provided by my district, I seem to never have the time to implement what I have learned to the students in the classroom.
Finally, I want to be able to convert the online textbook to an audible format so I can listen during my commute. This will help me be a better online participant in this course. Completing Leading Edge certification will expand my ability to utilize this technology and locate the opportunities to complete these goals for improving the learning environment in the classroom.
