In the lecture Promoting Self-Directed Learning with Technology, Dr. Katherine Cennamo describes the means necessary to construct self-directed learning using the GAME acronym. Authentic instruction and learning with technology is accomplished by setting goals, taking specific actions, monitoring these actions for effectiveness, and evaluating progress through reflection and review (Laureate Education, Inc., 2009b).
The International Society for Technology in Education [ISTE] has developed indicators and guidelines (National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers, or NETS-T) that give teachers the ability to transform and apply educational technology standards of proficiency within their classroom. In order to facilitate the introduction of the new computers and operating systems to students in my classroom, I will review the following indicators to gain a level of comfort in the classroom:
2.b: Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress. (ISTE, 2011)
5.a: Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning (ISTE, 2011).
In order to set in motion the actions necessary to implement these goals, I will arrange meetings with District technology staff and my Principal to monitor installation and setup prior to start of the new school year. I will ensure all computers have the required software and monitoring programs installed and are accessible with the teacher’s computer. I will also arrange to bring in District trained teachers who can assist me in setting up networking and establishing a web presence for students in the classroom.
In the short-term, do you see any additional ways I can bring success to these students with the addition of this technology? It will take more time to prepare lessons, and set up contracts using technology, but our resources indicate that when we use these new tools effectively, students will do better on their work and remember what they have done. Now the next step will be to put this technology in their hands and have them construct and present lessons to their peers. Cennamo, et al. (2009) indicate a valid approach will include introducing the technology in a small group setting to establish fair and balanced learning environments (p. 90). In the past, I have found that small group work is an effective tool because it allows multiple viewpoints to several ideas while introducing individuality through collaborative awareness.
